The 2 programs we offer will provide you with the qualifications and skills to lead Outward Bound programs in Australia, and the potential for ongoing work and a career with us.

The 2 programs combine:

  • Study to achieve the nationally the accredited qualifications - Certificate III and Certificate IV in Outdoor Recreation through TAFE NSW;
  • Industry professional development training;
  • Work experience and internal Outward Bound Australia training and;
  • Ongoing work and a career with us.

The Scholarship Program - Certificate III in Outdoor Recreation - January 2019 to June 2019

Outward Bound Australia are offering a limited number of scholarships to complete the Certificate III in Outdoor Recreation at TAFE NSW Lithgow College.

Starting in January 2019, the scholarship includes:

  1. Participation in a 14-day Outward Bound Australia expedition program;
  2. All Certificate III in Outdoor Recreation enrolment costs;
  3. Vocational placements (approximately 10 days) on an Outward Bound Australia program.

Upon completion of  your Certificate III, you may be invited to continue your sponsored qualifications through Outward Bound Australia's premier Instructor Development Program. 


The Instructor Development Program - Certificate IV in Outdoor Recreation - June 2019 and beyond

The Instructor Development Program is a 3-year commitment to Outward Bound Australia  for which you receive:

  • Certificate IV in Outdoor Recreation at TAFE NSW covered by Outward Bound Australia;
  • Industry professional development training, Outward Bound Australia specific training and specialist activity training covered by Outward Bound Australia;
  • Start earning a wage while you study; and
  • Ongoing employment and professional development opportunities with Outward Bound Australia following graduating from the Certificate IV.

Outward Bound Australia provides a number of additional scholarship benefits to further encourage people who identify as Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples or people from Culturally and Linguistically Diverse backgrounds to apply for these positions.

Who are we looking for and the selection process

What type of person are we looking for?

No previous experience in Outdoor Education is required. We are looking for people with exceptional interpersonal skills, a passion for education, the natural environment and personal development. It is preferred that you have experience in the outdoors especially in activities such as rock climbing, abseiling, flat or white water canoeing, kayaking or rafting, and bush walking. You will enjoy seeing people step out of their comfort zones and achieve great things. 


Are there any minimum requirements?

  • You must be over 18 years old as of 1st January 2019;
  • You must have, or be able to obtain a relevant state or territory Working with Children Check in NSW and a Working with Vulnerable People card in ACT;
  • You must have working rights in Australia for at least 3.5 years. Outward Bound Australia will not sponsor visas for overseas applicants for this program;
  • You must have a valid Australian driver's licence.


When does this program start?

You must be available to commence on 12th January 2019 in Tharwa, ACT.


What is the selection process?

STEP 1 - The first step will be to complete our online application. You will need to:

  • Upload a resume;
  • Give us details about your personal strengths and experience in the outdoors;
  • Complete online ability testing (numbers, words, shapes, interests and personality). This helps us assess whether you will need assistance to complete the TAFE courses and ensure support is available.
  • Online applications close 5th October 2018.


STEP 2 - We will assess the online applications and invite successful applicants to our on-site Selection Course.  You MUST attend one of the selection courses to continue with your application.

Uki, NSW 5 - 7 November 2018

Tharwa, ACT 9 - 11 November 2018

Confirmation of attendance to a selection course will close 19th October 2018.


STEP 3  Attend and complete a selection course in either ACT or NSW.  The selection course is anopportunity for you to assess if Outward Bound is the right career move for you, and for us to meet you in person and select the best candidates for the positions being offered.


STEP 4 - Scholarship offers will be sent by 30th November 2018.


Locations for Study and Work

The Scholarship Program - Certificate III in Outdoor Recreation - January 2019 to June 2019

12 January 2019 - 14-day Outward Bound Australia course experience in Tharwa, ACT.

28 January 2019 - You will spend the next 5 months (January - June 2019) based TAFE NSW, Lithgow College studying the Certificate III in Outdoor Recreation. This is a full-time study program with a lot of practical field time. During your Certificate III we will also arrange vocational placements on our expedition programs in one of Outward Bound Australia's stunning locations.


The Instructor Development Program - Certificate IV in Outdoor Recreation - June 2019 to June 2020

June 2019 - June 2020 - The Certificate IV in Outdoor Recreation will be a combination of study based at TAFE NSW, Lithgow College combined with in field experience at Outward Bound Australia's operating areas.


Post study employment at Outward Bound Australia - June 2020 to June 2022

Upon successful completion of your Certificate IV, you will be engaged at either our Northern Region Base near Murwullimbah, NSW or our Southern Region Base at Tharwa, ACT. While these will be your administrative bases, we have operational area's covering NSW, Victoria, ACT, WA and QLD that you will have opportunities to work from in some of Australia's most inspiring places.
